Traumatised children can traumatise carers
Understanding the impact that traumatised children can have on their carers is at the heart of our service.
In our experience placements are made with best intentions and with the adults involved full of hope and anticipation for the young person.
For the child however the placement may not be perceived as positive, their past relationships and experiences inform them that adults cannot be trusted and the world is unsafe. The family or home they are placed in becomes a threat not a sanctuary!
The behaviours and lack of emotional balance the child brings to the placement undermines the adults. The carers become defensive and at times controlling, the placing authority becomes disappointed and at times critical.
The adults focus on the relationship they have with each other and communication breaks down.
The child becomes lost and hidden; at this point disruption is often seen as the only option with everyone questioning each other’s commitment.
We can help all those involved to find a pathway to progress forward. This may involve:
- Mediation
- Training
- Consultancy
- Supervision
- Direct Therapy
